It’s So Unfair!

Malcolm WebberMalcolm Webber

Many times as leaders, it feels like we are giving everything to try to help others without getting much in return. It seems so unfair!

But this is the nature of the Christian life – to love others and to do to them what we would have them do to us (Luke 6:31). This is the nature of servanthood. In particular, this is the nature of servant leadership – not to be served but to serve (Matt. 20:28). This is the way of the cross – to allow ourselves to suffer loss in order that others may be benefited (1 Pet. 2:20-21).

Indeed, it is not fair, but it is the true Christian life and true Christian leadership. This is what God has called us to do. And when we do this, He receives it as an act of love to Him! It is painful in this life. But it brings eternal glory to Him and to us (1 Pet. 1:6-7). And it’s the way – the only way – into the deep things of God.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (Hebrews 12:1-3)
