Thinking About an Affair? Count the Cost: 8 Reasons You Should Run, Not Walk, from Infidelity

Michael HyattMichael Hyatt

There have been quite a few good articles in Christian media after the Ashley Madison hack. Here’s one by Michael Hyatt.

The Ashley Madison hack has spurred a lot of talk about adultery. An untold number of its clients have already resigned jobs or been served divorce papers. A few have even committed suicide.

We know that some famous Christian leaders were exposed in this. Hyatt gives eight major reasons why every Christian should avoid infidelity:

  1. It’ll cost your reputation… It’s wrong and everyone knows it.
  2. It might cost your job.
  3. It’ll cost you money… Affairs are expensive.
  4. It’ll probably cost your family. Two thirds of marriages are toast after an affair… If you have children, they’ll be confused and hurt by your betrayal.
  5. It’ll cost you friendships… Don’t be surprised if close friends pull away when news of your adultery gets out – which it will.
  6. It’ll cost you your emotional health… The average affair lasts about six months, but the negative effects can last a lot longer.
  7. It’ll cost your legacy. If the average affair lasts just six months, are you willing to trade that for the kind of things your grandchildren will say about you?
  8. It might even cost your soul.

Hyatt finishes on a positive note: “There is hope after an affair.” He mentions a friend who was caught in adultery but, by God’s grace, the marriage was restored.  However, such an ending is rare when there’s adultery.
